Reclaim & Reconnect
I have felt as though lately, that I have not respected the art of photography as I should. A disconnection from why I started and enjoyed portraiture and photography in general has been lost in the desire to do every and all things to make money and have this be my main and great source of income. In so doing I have dulled my creativity and have tried to do different things that aren’t me with photography.
It is good to have a knowledge of different things within this medium of art and expression you engage with but it isn’t wise to want to do every and all things. It is a lack of direction. I am now hoping that I can pivot and get back to what it is I love doing and for the reasons I began. Which, simply, was to capture the essence of a person, where they would see themselves in a picture and recognize whichever version of themselves they are in the portraits we crafted together. Hopefully they like the person they see and if not, at least they recognize and agree to who that person is.
I do not, for myself, believe I need to know it all. I need to know the basics, understand the rules, break some of them in exploration of art. Art is breaking the rules, forging new paths. I need to respect the art by being true to it. I do believe I can make a good living out of this work, and can do it beautifully and truthfully, so that I am not despising what it is I do because I sold myself to something that isn’t me (no, not the illuminati).
So as an artist, I want to encourage the people whose eyes come across this, not to lose the soul of why they create, it will enrich you and the people who you share your work and art with. And if you are extra blessed with what you do and /or aren’t quite in standing with the true nature of what you want to do, do what you have to do but do not lose touch with your artistry. If you make commercial music for consumption or for tiktok to make a living but want to sing ballads, make those ballads for yourself or a few people and share with them, keep the flame alive, don’t let it die, don’t let go off it.
